La Famille - The family
In this course students will learn to communicate in French about family members.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
At the end of this course, students should be able to communicate in French to introduce the members of their family. They should be able to discuss information about their parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins and family pets. The summative assessment task for this course will require students to create a slide show or video in which they introduce each of the members of their family. The presentation must include audio and written descriptions in French for each family member.
Language to be included for each family member:
- Introduce family member describing how they are related (eg: Voici ma mère/ Voici mon père / Voici ma sœur / Voici mon frère, etc.)
- Name (Elle s’appelle… / Il s’appelle…)
- Age (Elle a quarante-cinq ans / Il a quarante-sept ans)
- adjectives describing appearance and personality (Elle est grande et gentille. / Il est grand et gentil.)
At the end of this course, students should be able to show mastery of the following grammar elements:
- Differentiate between the masculine and feminine definite articles: le, la, l' and les
- Differentiate between the masculine and feminine possessive articles: mon, ma, mes
- Differentiate between masculine and feminine adjectives to be able to describe family members
- Demonstrate accurate knowledge of numbers from 0-100 in word form: e.g., zéro, un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, etc.
- Construct accurate sentences using subject pronouns: Je, Il, Elle
- Construct accurate sentences to describe age using the verb AVOIR
- Construct accurate sentences to describe appearance and characteristics using the verb ETRE
- Construct accurate sentences to introduce family members' names using the verb S'APPELER
- Construct accurate sentences to describe appearance and characteristics using either masculine or feminine forms of adjectives
COURSE STRUCTURE:
This course will use the Blended Online format, and will follow the Station Rotation model as outlined by the Christenson’s Institute classifications. Participants will attend school and participate in face-to-face instruction; however, this is our inaugural year of implementation of our 1:1 Digital Devices strategy, which will see every student issued with iPads.

COURSE LENGTH AND ORGANISATION:
Instruction and participation in this Blended Learning course will take place over 6 weeks. The course has been designed to correspond with the iPad app iCanSpeakFrench, Module 2. iCSF Module 2 is ordered into 4 Situations. At the completion of each Situation, students undertake a series of quizzes assessing their understanding of the topics covered.
It is recommended that students aim to complete one Situation per week in Weeks 1 - 4 of the course. This will allow students to focus on creating and evaluating interview scripts and videos during Weeks 5-6.
PREREQUISITES SKILLS:
This course is the second in a sequence designed for Year 7 junior high school students. Students are expected to have already completed iCanSpeakFrench Module 1 in the previous unit of this course. It is a necessity for students to have grasped the language skills introduced in iCSF Module 1.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS:
Students will need an iPad with the iCanSpeakFrench Module 2 app installed.
They will also require an Apple MacBook Air, as per the school's digital devices requirements.
Students will require internet access. (Wi-Fi Internet access is provided at school.)

PERSONALISED LEARNING AND DIFFERENTIATION:
This course has been designed to promote personalised learning. The iCanSpeakFrench digital resource around which this course has been designed allows students to progress at their own pace. Each week, students will be provided with compulsory learning activities to complete. Supplementary activities and exercises will be provided to extend students who complete the compulsory tasks quickly and easily. I will work in consultation with the school's Individual Learning and Educational Development department to ensure that students’ individual needs are catered for.
